Today was "Take Your Kid To Work Day" for grade 9's all across Canada, and I was fortunate enough to bring my son, Nicholas, along with me and show him everything that I have worked for. - Don't forget to get your dogs out before the fireworks start.
- Leash them to potty, even if you dont normally to avoid flight mode. A tightening collar is best to avoid slip outs (slip lead, martingale, prong)
- Don't force your dog trick or treating. Between fireworks, costumes, crowds, and chocolate, it's not worth it.
- A crate can be your best friend on these occasions. Don't overwhelm your dog with constant people at the door!
- No sweets or chocolate! Not only is chocolate toxic, but xylitol too!

On Friday, this group completed their 4 week recall class.

This was so much more than a recall class. Why? Because a solid recall is very little about the actual act of recall, and how we interact and engage with our dog on a daily basis.

Together, we focused on:
• Communication
• Proofing
• Engagement
• Impulse control
• Play
• Recall mechanics and basics
• Recall Games
• Recall under distraction

We got to celebrate so many wins. Together. Some of my most favourite wins weren't even about recall at all. They were watching previously scared and nervous dogs gain confidence. I witnessed 2 dogs playing with their handler in a new environment for the first time every. I literally am watching relationships blossom in front of my eyes. Those wins are priceless! So proud of all of you. Thanks for being a rad group!

Meet Casey!

The kinda husky puppy who will make you forget what it's really like to have a husky and have you questioning if maybe you actually want a husky 🤣 honestly just making you forget how much puppies can suck in general.

This girl is such a sweet puppy with SUCH a chill personality. A unicorn puppy. She still makes mistakes and gets excited, but is also really willing to work and settle down. She has been such a pleasure to work with. Her humans reached out for training (thanks @steviethewonderdogo for the referral!) immediately to set her up for success and are very consistent.

Unlike puppy classes, our Mindful Puppy Program is much less geared towards basic obedience like sits and downs, but instead concepts that are going to foster a healthy future together: communication, engagement, structure, boundaries, impulse control and handler value and relevance. An anxious, nervous or fearful dog has a heightened stress response, meaning they are on the edge or routinely living in a state of fight or flight. Survival mode. These dogs do not possess healthy self-soothing or coping strategies, so when we leave them to their own "thoughts" or actions, their unstable nervous often spirals. Their emotions take over. Do they freeze? Do they flee? Do they fight?

Instead of leaving them to spiral, give them the magic ingredient of ✨️ PREDICTABILITY ✨️

Predictability in communication, predictability in patterns, predictability in routine, predictability in structure and predictability in boundaries.

Giving your anxious/fearful dog predictability allows them the put their brain into logical, known, soothing patterns, rather than spiraling into their frantic state of mind.

In this video: Raven goes into flight mode around traffic. She has before gotten loose in this state running into traffic and unknowingly risking her life. On leash, she will typically yank and "aligator" on the leash. Here, we are working in a park on the corner of the busy street that she is known to flee in. We recognized her state of mind heightening and gave her the very simple task of back and forth leash patterns, something that we have practiced many times in past. Giving her brain something predictable and constructive to focus on helped her to down-regulate her nervous system. After a couple minutes she was able to fall into pack drive with her mom.

Say Hi to Miss Foxy who's here to bring more cattle dog spice into my life. I've had the pleasure of working with so many cattle dogs and I always enjoy it. They love to work and they thrive with strong leadership. Without it? They'll run your life. Most common unmanaged behaviors I see? Reactivity, herding and nipping.

Foxy is no exception. She rules the roost. She is demanding for attention and affection, does what she wants when she wants, has behavioral peeing, herds and nips at guests, and is reactive towards people and dogs.

She has past aversion to a crate so we are slowly working on building up a positive association with the create, implementing consistent structure and boundaries between the whole family, overall reliability of obedience, impulse control and neutrality! Added bonus if we get around to getting her nails done 💅

Congratulations Team Baloo!

Watching the growth between these two has been incredible. Mom adopted Baloo earlier this year. He had lived down south as a stray and in the shelters. When I first met him he was a wild child, climbing all over the furniture and people. He was new to everything, including a leash. He had no ability to sit still. He was wreaking up havoc with their other dog, cat and all the humans. Walks were a challenge and unenjoyable due to his leash reactivity and pulling.

We have implemented a clear communication system, healthy structure and boundaries, taught leash manners and worked through some challenging reactivity. While they have some things to continue to work on such as engagement in new environments and confidence building, mom is now empowered with the tools, skills and knowledge to continue to tackle these hurdles. Not to mention unlimited pack walks and a community to help support them moving forward.

This duo is a pair that could make me cry. Mom came to me feeling hopeless, skeptical, defeated, and at her wits end. She no longer felt comfortable walking Harper after a redirect bite during yet another reactive episode. At their final session, they showed us loose leash skills under distraction, neutrality around other dogs and lots of engagement. I'm so excited for their future together.

Meet Benny Boy! He is a rescue terrier who loves to do terrier things! Terrier impulsiveness isn't overly conducive to our human world, so we are teaching his handler all about structure and impulse control. His human was worried about his willingness to work, but as soon as we laid down a clear line of communication and structure, he showed us he loves to work! Small dogs should be held to the same standard. Give them the training and watch them thrive!

Nellie, her mom, and I celebrated their incredible progress with a final session at the brewery, and this team aced it. Nellie's mom LOVES to train and is so involved in Nellie's life. This was actually a case of doing TOO much. She was fueling the spicy fire. Together, we introduced more structure, teaching Nellie independence from mom and mitigated stranger danger. When I first met Nellie, I couldn't even talk to mom without being reacted to. I am so excited for their life together. Nellie is one lucky lady.

What they need is an owner who is engaged, connected, and regulated. An owner that provides them with enrichment and fulfillment. An owner who is present.

It's not necessarily that I'm against dogs having friends, but I absolutely do not believe it is a requirement for a happy and fulfilled life. I prefer prioritizing healthy socialization through neutrality and coexistence and prefer engagement with handler!

When you're trying to lead 120lbs of dgaf mentality, you gotta work your butt off for those results. And that she did. Along with Kierans independent personality, mom also struggles with inconsistency with her family in the household, which can often make training feel very frustrating - putting in the work and feeling like others are undoing it. Meet Zara!!

Zara is a massive girl with big feelings. She experiences a lot of fear when she leaves the home where walks were near impossible (having 150lbs putting on the brakes is always fun), and seeing dogs was also a challenge. Our last session, we were able to walk around their neighborhood with SUCH a great state of mind after teaching her calm mindset in the home and leash manners. We're still working to boost engagement, but already improved so much. Next we will tackle coexisting with the dogs!

The night marketing term that loves together thrown around but is somehow always equated to puzzles, lickimats, or frozen kongs. Now, don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with giving your dog these things, but they should never replace TRUE ENRICHMENT.

Enrichment comes from genetically fulfilling activities.

Some dogs are bred to chase, bite, herd, hunt, retrieve, pull, or sniff. Knowing what your dog's breed was bred for can help guide you in what activities will be most fulfilling for your dog. Giving our dogs an outlet to practicing these activities is not only fulfilling but can help to reduce behavioral challenges you may face.

Fargo has big scary shepherd energy, but deep down is the biggest softy, and he knew how to play that to his advantage and pull at mom's heart strings. This family had done training in the past and even did a fancy B&T, but we're given next to no go home information, which resulted in training fallout. B&Ts are only great if owners go home with education, tools and new skills to implement. Together, we worked on structure, accountability, leash manners, counterconditioning, and impulse control. I'm sad to see them moving away, but I'm so glad they were able to learn some valuable skills for a smooth transition!

Teaching our dogs to overcome challenges is a great way to help boost your dogs confidence and enhance trust in your relationship.

All too often, I see owners acting like "helicopter parents", helping their dog with every little challenge they face, or creating a "bubble boy" life by sheltering them from experiencing moments of hardship. In return, they often get dogs who don't know how to cope with stressors, experience anxiety, and have little to no resilience.

Of course, like everything, this comes with
✨️ NUANCE ✨️

You have to be able to read your dog. Knowing when to push them or when it's time to take a break. Helpful skills to have include:
✔️understanding of leash pressure
✔️clear marker system
✔️breaking skills into smaller tasks and building
✔️patience

Pro tip: avoid coddling or heightened emotion of they slip or stumbling (again, use discretion). They are okay! Keep your energy neutral and let them problem solve! They are more resilient than you think!

I don't like bungee leashes for behavior modification training because:
- poor timing
- in accurate timing, leash pressure and communication
- allows rehearsal of unwanted behaviors
- allows boundary pushing

**all tools have their purpose and place, and this one very well could in some instances. I'm totally open learning other ways to use tools if maybe you have a way to use it for behavior. Respectful conversation only!

What is Community Night?
I've decided to hold an exclusive event every couple of months to be able to give back to my private clients! Training reactivity can be a very serious journey that can often have us forgetting to get to enjoy the moments in between. So excited about this one! Miss Windy has officially completed our Mindset Reset Program!

Windy is the SWEETEST dog. She loves people (which is shocking based off her history and what people have done to her in the past, before being rescued), but heavily struggled with anxiety outside her apartment in busy downtown Vancouver due to constant overstimulation. On top of the anxiety making leaving the apartment difficult to leave, she also experienced dog reactivity. And living in busy Vancouver is a tough place to live when you have a reactive dog.

Before coming to us, they tried 3 different trainers; 2 R+ and one balanced. But things were not working. I was referred to them by Hannah at @wcpdogrescue and I'm so honored to have helped them along this journey. We now have them confidently walking around their neighbourhood with all the skills they need to face anxiety and reactivity and have enjoyable walks together.

Owning a reactive dog isn't for the faint of heart.

It takes commitment, determination, patience and resilience. It's an ongoing journey and not a destination. Not only does it teach you so much about dogs, but it forces you to look inward and learn more about yourself as a person.

I remember the days where I wished so badly to not have a reactive dog, and while those feelings occasionally pop up, I couldn't imagine my life without this amazing creature. Congratulations to this duo for completing the Mindset Reset Program.

This truly was such an important case, because in our society we see this all too often. The challenges were not due to a lack of knowledge or skillset, but a challenge of human emotion. Radar was long ago brought into her life and quickly became a security blanket. Their relationship is deeply ingrained in unhealthy affection dynamics which led to a lot of behavioral challenges. I am grateful for a client who is ready to hear the honesty. These sessions were mostly about channeling moms zen, implementing clear boundaries and structure for them both, and the skills came easy. Yesterday was a beautiful session to see how far they've come.

The purpose behind all of our group classes is structured training opportunities for management and healthy exposure. The expectation is that you are coming with a solid foundation and training plan with the focus of neutrality and handler-dog engagement. No dogs will be meeting or interacting.

A walk along a trail practicing neutrality with other dogs. Dog trainer will have a dog and be less available for questions.

•Leash Manners PW•
$15.00
Be guided by a professional dog trainer along a busy city trail. Through the walk you will have opportunities to practice drills and set up scenarios to work on your handling, engagement and neutrality. Dog trainer is available to help keep the structure and for tips and questions.

•Group OB•
$20.00
Stationary class where you are guided through various drills to help gain handler confidence, dog neutrality, engagement and owner relevance. Dog trainer is available to help keep the structure and for tips and questions.

•OB +•
$20.00
Same as Group OB, but a level up! Pushing boundaries, more freedom, higher difficulty, same focus! Must have attended Group OB 3 times or received the green light from the Trainer. Dog trainer is available to help keep the structure and for tips and questions.

A huge congratulations to Luna(tic) and family on graduating our Mindset Reset Program! This family came to me with a rambunctious teenager with very little impulse control and it was making walks very challenging. They were seeking more freedom in their life with Luna. With lots of hard work and consistency, this family has a dog who can join them in outings and display neutral energy, she receives compliments from family members on her behavior, and she has a much bigger world. They report a 180 change in her behavior and it really all just came down to understanding how to relate to their pup! I'm so excited for the rest of their lives together!

Got a couple of dog and human teams together for a trial run at a local barn. And we had an absolute blast.

The goal of the evening was not about learning agility or sport, but growing connection, engagement, building confidence and offering our reactive dogs a space to just be and have fun and an environment they may not typically thrive in.

We all had so much fun, and we cannot wait to run this again, only we want YOU to come!
