Give Your Dog a Recall That Actually Sticks!

You know the feeling, standing at the park, calling your dog, and holding your breath to see if they’ll listen. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don’t. And when they don’t, it can feel frustrating, even scary.

That’s why I created Building Recalla hands-on, four-week class where you and your dog learn the simple habits, daily patterns, and relationship-building skills that transform recall from “hit-or-miss” into a built-in reflex.

Why Most Dogs Ignore Recall

Here’s the truth: recall doesn’t fail because your dog is “stubborn” or because you aren’t trying hard enough. It fails because most owners skip the foundation work and jump straight to off-leash or longline practice.

The result?

Dogs don’t find coming back valuable.

Distractions like squirrels or smells always win.

Recall breaks down the second the stakes get higher.

Without engagement, impulse control, and a strong handler-dog relationship, recall will always feel unreliable.

A New Approach to Recall

Instead of drilling recall commands in stressful situations, we’ll start by teaching your dog to choose you first. Through engagement games, impulse control work, and handler-focused play, you’ll build the foundation that makes recall natural and automatic.

By the end of this class, recall won’t feel like a trick, it will feel like part of your dog’s everyday behaviour.

Your 4 Week Curriculum

Over the course of four weeks, you’ll move through a step-by-step training process that builds both your dog’s skills and your confidence:

Week 1: Foundations & Engagement

We’ll introduce the marker system, proof obedience with duration, distance, and distraction, and begin impulse control and engagement drills that shift your dog’s focus onto you.

Week 2: Relationship & Recall Basics

Here’s where we layer in play, fulfillment, handler relevance, and the mechanics of recall itself, because recall isn’t just about the command, it’s about the relationship behind it.

Week 3: Recall Drills

From stationary recalls to hide-and-seek games, this week gives you structured drills that teach your dog to come back from different situations, whether moving, restrained, or free.

Week 4: Recall Scenarios

We finish with real-world scenarios where recall matters most. You’ll test your dog’s skills around distractions and leave with a framework to keep building after class ends.

Limited to 6 Participants

This class is intentionally capped at 6 participants only.

Why? Because your recall training deserves more than generic instruction in a crowded room. In a small group setting:

  • You get personal coaching – Ashlin will have eyes on you and your dog every week, giving real-time feedback tailored to your situation.

  • Your dog gets space to learn – fewer dogs in the room means less chaos, less distraction, and more quality practice.

  • Progress feels faster – instead of waiting around, you’ll spend more time actively training.

  • Your questions get answered – with a smaller class, you’ll never feel overlooked or left behind.

When you join, you’re not just signing up for a “class.” You’re securing one of only 6 seats in a close-knit training experience where both you and your dog get the focus you need.

Here's how it works:

When you sign up, you’ll receive a welcome packet with everything you need to get started. Each week, you’ll bring your dog and gear to class, work through live drills with Ashlin, and take home simple practices to apply daily.

By the end of four weeks, you’ll not only know how to practice recall but also how to enhance your value to your dog.

What We Can (and Can't) Promise

We can’t promise “instant recall.” But we can promise that you’ll leave with a clear plan, the right tools, and personal coaching to finally feel confident in your dog’s recall.

Hi, I'm Ashlin!

I'm the founder of The K9 Mindset Academy.

I’ve helped countless Fraser Valley families transform their relationship with their dogs, especially those struggling with anxiety, overexcitement, or difficult pasts. What I’ve learned is this: obedience alone isn’t enough. True change comes when a dog learns to regulate their emotions. Once calmness is in place, everything else (obedience, recall, manners) falls into line.

At K9MA, there is no “one size fits all.” Every program is customized to your lifestyle and your dog’s mental, physical, and emotional health. We start with positive reinforcement, then build structure using proven methods of operant conditioning. What we never use is fear, pain, or intimidation.

My role is to guide you in clear, safe communication with your dog, including how to use tools like prongs or e-collars responsibly, if they’re right for your dog. The goal isn’t just training, it’s a healthier, calmer, more connected relationship.

Stop Hoping. Start Trusting

You don’t have to keep crossing your fingers every time you call your dog, wondering if they’ll come back or keep running. That stress ends here.

With Recall Foundations, you’ll leave with a proven framework, hands-on practice, and personal coaching to finally build a recall you can rely on. No shortcuts. No guesswork. Just the tools, habits, and confidence that make recall part of everyday life.

When it matters most—at the park, on a trail, or in your own backyard, you’ll know your dog will choose you. And that peace of mind is priceless.

FAQ

What should I bring?

You’ll receive a detailed gear list in your welcome packet, including essentials like a leash, longline, and training rewards. For the final two sessions, we also require a second handler, this ensures safety and success as we run advanced recall drills with higher levels of distraction.

What if I miss a class?

I do not recommend missing a class. You will get a resource document to support your learning, but your in person learning will be the gamechanger.

Can my dog wear their e-collar and prong collar?

Yes. We will support your decision, always, to use training tools properly. I am happy to give tips for applying your e-collar to your recall drills too!

My dog has zero recall. Can we still join?

Yes. This class is designed for beginners and builds from the ground up.

Why do some dates require a second handler?

On those weeks, we’ll be practicing advanced recall scenarios where safety and success require two people.

What if my dog is reactive?

Reactive dogs who have done training for their reactivity and have a reactivity plan can join this class. No dogs will be interacting. This class will be run with similar structure to our MYB! Classes. I reserve the right to excuse a participant with repeated lunging or a dog who cannot recover from their reactivity. The decision is at the discretion of the dog trainer and there will be no refund given. I will always work to support you and your reactive dogs as best I can, but also have to think of the entire class. This class is not appropriate for aggressive dogs.
